UK Government Regulates Web Standards (Majority of Websites could be non-compliant)

1 Oct 2004

Confusion reigns over Government ruling on Website Accessibity.

With the realease of the new Disability Discrimination Act websites are now included and companies should take reasonable steps to ensure their goods and services are accessible.

What this means in reality is unclear, the Government body that would be responsible for inforcing these regulations the Disability Rights Commission, are taking steps to encourage improvement in this area, it is likely that we are only going to understand the legal implications should any test cases go to court.

In the meantime with over 2 million people in the UK with a significant visual imparement, it makes good business sense to make improvements.
