You need to feel confident with the hosting and support of your site.
There are two key aspects to supporting your website once it has been delivered
Infrastucture
Your website will be hosted on a server provided by either your web designer or a 3rd party, any problem in this area can lead to frantic buck passing if you are unfortunate. You should ensure your are satisfied with the following:
- Server Location / Facilities
- Data Backup Provision
- Connectivity of server to Network and redundancy
- Server Software Maintenance / Service Packs Etc.
- Firewalls and Security
- Fault resolution processes
- Hours of support provision
- Domain Name Management
- Email / Spam Filtering
- Number and nature of other websites on the same server.
Decisions in this area often become an equation in the impact downtime would have on your business and the associated cost of ensuring uptime. No system is perfect and will have a degree of downtime, redundancy and removal of risk can push up the cost exponentially. Make sure your provision is right for your business needs.
Software Support
Most websites are provided with a degree of content management or interactivity. Once your site is delivered you need to make sure of the following:
- You have technical support for any bugs that manifest with the system
- You are provided with ongoing user support and training if required
- You are provided support for changes in hosting platform such as service packs
Ideally you will have an ongoing support arrangement with both your hosting company and website software providers, ideally this will be one company so as to avoid conflicts and offer a single point of contact for issue resolution.
